Oct 23, 2014 Abel Longoria Contest, Vanagon 133
Photo of same model Wheelskin installed courtesy of John aka oldhuldy67 from TheSamba.com
I bought a Wheelskins Steering Wheel Wrap (Part #: WS-8496-BK) back in March of 2014 with the intent on adding it Libby’s steering wheel. Well… since then I’ve switched over to a South African steering wheel and no longer need this Wheelskins cover. Its been sitting in Libby’s room ever since I bought it. Yes… Libby has her own room, crazy right? lol.
I could sell it online but I thought I’d hold a contest and give it away completely free of charge to a fellow Vanagon owner. So if your stock Vanagon steering wheel is super smooth and slick due to its years of use add this genuine leather steering wheel cover and make it feel better than new.
The Wheelskins Steering Wheel Wrap given away in this contest is brand new and has never been used. It’s still in its unopened box.The normal price of this cover is $46.95.
Wheelskins are the finest, most luxurious genuine leather steering wheel covers available. They are individually hand-crafted in California of choice domestic cowhide, especially tanned for Wheelskins. The exclusive patented lacing hole reinforcement system ensures a tight custom fit on all Volkswagen steering wheels.
Easy to install, Wheelskins are the best way to inexpensively customize and upgrade any plastic steering wheel. They are also the premier option for replacing a damaged or worn original factory leather covered wheel.
Fits:
84-91 Vanagon with power steering
93-96 Eurovan
Step 1: Leave a comment below telling me how long you’ve had your Vanagon. ie. 2 years.
Step 2: That’s it. You’re done.

Owning an awning was not high on my Want List until I spent a full day trapped...
Almost 2 years to the day. Thanks Abel.
I’ve had my T3 Westfalia for 6 years now.
I’ve owned Westies since 1977. Currently ’87 Westy for the last 15 years. Regular on the samba, dobryan. 🙂
Nice! 15 years? I’m impressed!
6 months. (todays my birthday 😉 )
Happy birthday!
4 years
I’ve been an owner of Vanagons since 2000. 1st one was a 82 Westy and now I have Kat, which is a survivor of Hurricane Katrina.
Had mine for a year and 3 months now. My dad had a blue big window GL 5cyl in South Africa when I was a kid.
Love the site Abel!
Whoa so cool… That’s neat to hear for sure. Ps. I love my South African front grill!
10 years
It’s only been a little over 10 months, but i’ve been able to put a little over 14,000 miles in that time. So quality not quantity here 🙂
Nice! I’ve had mine for 14 months and have close to 11,000 miles that I’ve put on it. My vw mechanic told me I’m putting way too many miles on it… My response… I bought it to drive it, not to store it! Hehe
We bought “The Van” in May of 1991. I still drive it everyday except in winter.
23 years!
Best one yet! I haven’t met anyone who’s had theirs since it was in the showroom floor. Major props to you!
I have my westy 6 yrs.
4 years. wow.
Vanagon #3 for three years this April.
I have had my vanagon for little over a year, it is my daily driver and will be for a while
4.5 years
16 years and 2 weeks. 200,000 miles and countless memories.
I am about to travel 600 miles to pick my first one up in the USA. Share the love as well as the ‘breasticles’.
Just over two years. Given to me by my high school water polo coach.
1982 diesel, owned for ten years!!
I have had the pleasure of being with my 1982 Air Cooled Beauty, Adeline for about 1-1.5 years. We have been through some rough times, but we still tight. Cheers!
Owned a van since around 1999, current syncro westfakia for 9 years [or so]
My marshmallow has owned me for about 10 years-♡ her
Haha.. That’s the correct way to word it!
Wow, nice turn out. My steering wheel twists at the top from years of using it as a handle to saddle up- 3 years I’ve owned the white rhino 🙂 thanks
My folks bought “Big Red” (1991 Vanagon GL camper) in June of 1990. They picked him up at the factory in Germany in October of 1990 and drove him through Europe for a month before shipping him home with about 5k miles of adventures behind him. They then put another 180k miles of adventures on him throughout the US before parking him in their garage in 2008. Old age took the toll more on them than Big Red, so they switched vehicles to a 2004 VW Rialta – “Lovey Dub” (it had a bathroom for those early morning calls). I’m in the process of inheriting Big Red and fixing him up for more adventures so I can add to the family stories.
Love that it’s still in the family!
6 months! Best 6 months ever!!!
Ahoy Captain Abel…I bought me dead diesel 82 1.9 n/a Westy sight unseen in 2011 and towed ‘er from New Mexico to the coves of Washington State where she was rebuilt stern to bow… this land yacht..she be once again proudly plying the backwaters of North America..and beyond..arrrgh!
2 years ago both my kids graduated from high school. My oldest joined the U.S. Army & my youngest went off to college. My wife of 20 years and I had empty nest syndrome big time and needed to fill it or who knows where pit marriage would end up. So we adopted our ’82 Westy (which is less expensive than marriage counseling)!
Lol.. Less expensive for sure
6.5 years
Me and “Beaver” have been together for 6 years.
18 years.. August 1996. that’s for Sluggo, the 1987 Syncro Westy
Sluggo was my 6th VW Camper… My first was a 65 Splittie back in 1966. Have added a 1990 Syncro Westy in 2000 that got totaled and has been replaced with a 91 Syncro Westy in 2010 … still in modification / upgrade phase.

Will be a year in this coming march. 88′ Vanagon CHC named Bergan
“Blinglebee”, 1986 Wolfsburg Weekender, 2004-now. (Third westy since 2000).
I’ve wanted a van since I was 14 years old. I first wanted a split window but when I grew up I did some research and decided that wanted a Vanagon Westfalia.
I’ve been saving all my life for this van… I’m now 23 years old (tomorrow, October 25th is my 24th birthday) and two weeks ago my dream came true and finally managed to bought my first and own vehicle, a 87′ Vanagon Westfalia Joker 1.6 TDI. Road trip mode ON!!!!
Greetings from Chile! (if I win I have an address in the states where to ship 🙂
Happy belated birthday!
I bought Buttercup, a 1990 GL 2WD one year ago, I’ve put it a new engine, tranny, led interior lighting , dual battery set up with a 1200W invereter/charger, 16 inch rims with T rated tires, a 7″ tft touchscreen in dash stereo, a 24″ flat screen in the back, an Edgestar 65 chest fridge, Still on the list are a SA grill fog lights, an awning, rear tire mount… basically she wants to grow up and be Libby! in the last years we have been in 7+ National parks, traveled to Texas Utah Arizona,Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Montana
Man I’d love to hear more about that 24″ TV. Sounds nice!
I’ll take some pics next week when we head out to the eastern sierras, I don’t keep it in all the time, just for camping trips where we will have shore power until I get a generator and solar set up…
Syncro owner for 6 years, YES!!!!!
3 years!
1 year, 6 months. Also the same amount of time that I have had a constant stain of grease/dirt/grime under my fingernails… 😉
I had mine for about 3 years. Things in life changed so it had to go. After selling my 86 I kicked myself daily. I found the fancy Hawaiian hip shaker I had on the dash. The guy I bought my westy from also had regret of selling it to me. I ran into him about a year after selling it. He then dropped a bomb shell, he found a low mileage syncro. So in good faith I paid it forward. I gave him my hula girl. A couple years went by, then paying it forward Paid Off. Big.
The westy I sold was givin back to me and my family.
for Free.
So total time of ownership 5 years.
Whoa… That’s so cool… Love hearing these kind of stories
I’ve been a Westy owner since April 20 2010. I’ve owned my current Westy for 15 months. It’s my house. I live in it and will be posting my life to YouTube at YouTube.com/SeizeTodey – my last name is Todey (today)
Love the fact that you’re doing this! I have a FaceBook.com/LivingWithLess page and I just mailed out a $10 Starbucks gift card today. I have little fun contests on FaceBook.com/LivingWithLess
Way more FUN to give stuff away.

So cool Steve.. I’ll be checking out your page for sure!
Don’t own one–yet, but I have been stalking the websites and You Tube for years. Now I am going to develop a video game with Syncros in it. The game is about getting from Europe to Tierra del Fuego. You drivers run into obstacles along the way that you must traverse, of course. You get points, you lose points. Even upgrading your van will get you points. This is my first announcement for the game. I’ve got an Engineer ready to create a prototype. I will probably use Kickstarter to get the investment to make the game. I will distribute Wheelskins for investing in bringing the game to life.
I can’t wait. I want my own Syncro and most of you are guys, but my father made me a big car person with that first 1957 Austin Healey when we lived in Germany. I came along with the car 😉 I will update you on progress, if you are interested. You can ask me questions or make suggestions at e_lizabetht@yahoo.com . Thanks.
Which one? Folly? Six years. The Orphan? Twelve. Bleu? Sixteen before we let Britt send him to Great Britain. Brown Bus? Twenty-five.
