When I bought my 2014 BMW G650GS, which I’ve fondly named Gisela, I knew I was going to need some sort of rigid mount in order to hold my phone while I ride. I started searching the web for ‘best phone mounts’ and one item that kept coming up was a brand named RAM Mounts.
When purchasing this RAM Mount you need to order it in separate pieces in order to fit your specific application. The current setup I am using and reviewing in this article is made of these RAM Mount items. The X-Grip Universal 5″ Grip (RAM Model No. RAM-HOL-UN10BU), the Long Extension Arm (RAM Model No. RAM-B-201U-C) and the Mount Base with U-Bolt (RAM Model No. RAM-B-231). There are different options also available for instance a different X-Grip for smaller iPhones and shorter Extension Arms for example.
I must say that I didn’t really know anything about the company as I am new to the motorcycle world so I have had to rely on consumer reviews and testimonials. The actual user feedback left by others is what I based my decision on in purchasing this product. There were quite a few good reviews, and not just on RAM Mount’s website but everywhere I researched this product. I also looked at the price, I mean lets face it, you get what you pay for, and if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is.
Price wise the RAM Mount seemed a little steep for a phone mount but considering it is made up of three pieces…. I went for it. I really like the look of the product although I was very skeptical of the way the phone is held between the X-Grip. To my suprise, it actually held a lot better than I thought.
The RAM Mount arm is made of powder coated Marine Grade aluminum and clamps down VERY tight on both the ball/u joint handle bar mount and X-Grip phone mount. It is secured to the handle bars by a very sturdy u joint/ball mount. This sucker isn’t going anywhere.
While riding At 60 mph, there is a noticeable vibration in the RAM Mount but that is probably due to my engine being a single piston engine and causing a bit more vibrations than most. So, if you have a big cruiser, you probably won’t notice anything. Another plus with the longer RAM Mount arm is that I am able to attach all my cables to the phone without any bending or crimping of the wires.
One downside that I noticed immediately is that on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the volume buttons are on the top left hand side of the phone. Of course, right where the X-Grip’s top left foot pegs are, but if I center the grip peg between the buttons, there is no affect on the phone. Same goes for the power button on the right side of the phone. If you position the phone just right the mount won’t interfere at all.
If you are in the market for a phone mount for your motorcycle, I definitely recommend the RAM Mount X-Grip as I have been extremely pleased with mine thus far.
