Blue October was playing 2 shows back to back here in Houston towards the end of December 2013 and prior to the first show I was hanging out backstage watching the guys set up. Alski walks up and asks “Abel, you got a minute…” uh-oh. That’s never a good thing. I say sure and he asks that we walk over to his office. Oh crap… great. He walks in, then I walk in and he says “close the door behind you…” Yea I figured I really did something wrong because it felt like I was being called into the principle’s office or my boss’s office to get laid off. lol.
Alski says “oh no… don’t worry its nothing bad”. Pheeeww. OK cool, I’m not getting fired from the job I don’t even have, I can breathe now. He’s goes on to mention how him, Ryan, Colter and Floyd have been talking about buying some enduro motorcycles and taking some time to trek across Colorado camping, fishing, hiking etc. He then went on to ask if me and Libby, my 1987 Vanagon Westfalia were interested in coming along for the trip.
I said “HEEEELLLLLLL YA! I’m in!”
I’ve owned Libby for about 5 months and the main reason I bought her was to make these EXACT kind of trips so why wouldn’t I be interested in tagging along for the trip. So the preliminary plan was that the 4 of them would be on bikes and I’ll tag along as a 5th and as a Support Vehicle in case they need anything. We’ll be leaving from Texas, riding up to Colorado, then across and back to Texas! That’s roughly 2,300 miles.
Of course this isn’t our exact route but it will give you an idea of the ride. Yes. It’s a loooong way. Hopefully the group will get together soon and kind of set a rough game plan of routes and what sights we want to hit along the way. The plan is to camp as much as possible, rural camping on BLM government land is preferred but camping in state park campgrounds and such will also be needed for those all-too-important hot showers and such. Each bike will be carrying their own camping gear, tent, sleeping bag, snacks, food etc. I will have plenty of space in Libby in order to store extras for everyone as well as some basic mechanical items that may need replacing along the way.
I’ve seen lots of adventure shows and follow a ton of people on various social media outlets that have done similar trips and I’ve always felt envious of their trips. That’s one of the main factors in me buying Libby was so that I too can have an adventure of my own but it turns out I’ll be sharing it with 4 other friends!
It’s trips like this that make long lasting memories… I can’t wait.

Owning an awning was not high on my Want List until I spent a full day trapped...
Sounds awesome, Abel. I think you all are gonna have a ton fun. Enjy the sites.
Sounds like a great trip. I am planning a Continental Divide trip around the same time on my Big GS.
You definitely have to document your time somehow David so we can also follow along. I bet that will be a great trip.
